58th National Film Awards Ceremony Stills, Winners List

The 58th National Film Awards presentation ceremony held on Sep 9 at New Delhi. Indian President Pratibha Patil given all award winners. Director K Balachander for Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Tamil Actor Dhanush for Best Actor Award (Aadukalam), Director Seenu Ramasamy for Best Tamil Film Award(Thenmerkku Paruvakkatru), Saranya Ponvannan for Best Actress Award (Thenmerkku Paruvakkatru). Malayalam Actor Salim Kumar receives Best Actor Award (Adaminte Makan Abu), Singer Rekha Bhardwaj for Best Playback Singer Award (female) Ishqiya (Hindi).

The awards were distributed by the President of India, Pratibha Patil in a function held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. on September 9.

Veteran Tamil filmmaker K. Balachander, was the cynosure of all eyes as he came to accept the prestigiousDadasaheb Phalke Award for his outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema.

Actor Dhanush and Salim Kumar were awarded with Best Actor award (
Rajat Kamal and Rs 50,000) for Aadukalam (Tamil) and Adaminte Makan Abu (Malayalam) respectively.

Dhanush got this award for the raw, nuanced portrayal of a cocky young man who learns lessons about life the hard way.

Reports emanating from Mumbai say that Bollywood’s leading starlet Vidya Balan has been ‘secretly married’ to her long time boyfriend Siddharth Roy Kapoor of the popular UTV group at an ‘undisclosed’ location. Known as the country’s commercial capital, Mumbai is also the headquarters of Bollywood, the world of Hindi films.

One of the most talented actresses of her generation, Vidya Balan is starring in a couple of challenging films at present. One of them is ‘The Dirrty Picture’, a film based on the life of Kollywood’s late sexy siren and the perennial item girl ‘Silk’ Smitha. The film is being directed by Milan Luthria; the other film Vidya has on hand is ‘Kahaani’, said to be a powerful script.

Rumours linking Siddharth and Vidya were doing rounds some time the past but the rumour regarding the marriage has shocked Bollywood. Reports further say that the wedding took place late last week and the couple is already on its way to celebrate their ‘honeymoon’ at a ‘safe haven’, the details of which are being kept ‘secret’.

Vidya, who has the knack of choosing performance-based roles quite often, had always maintained that it was merely a ‘bond of friendship’ that existed between her and Siddharth. It remains to be seen whether Vidya would concede the marriage or come out with her denial of the same!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 reviews, Wiki

With the big premier scheduled for tonight at midnight, the reviews for"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2" portend an exciting event for movie-goers. Of course, with the huge media build-up, it would be hard for HP fans to be disappointed by the last big screen installment of J.K. Rowling's series. Even those who might have scoffed at breaking the Deathly Hallows book into two parts are likely to be caught up in the LAST HARRY POTTER frenzy. Here are excerpts from reviews:

Tribune: Here in "Deathly Hallows Part 2" it's virtually non-stop action, though director David Yates, who has taken good care of these final four, ever-meaner Potter adventures, does a very crafty thing, following adapter Steve Kloves' screenplay. "Deathly Hallows  Part 2" doesn't come flying out of the gate, throwing computer-generated Death Eaters at your face. ... Part 2 begins, gravely, with Radcliffe's tense encounters with John Hurt (as Ollivander, the wandmaker) and Warwick Davis (as the sphinxlike goblin Griphook, with wee pointy teeth). These are conversations, not just exposition chunks, and they instantly remind audiences that while "Deathly Hallows — Part 2" will kill off various characters, some of them in startling and violent ways, it will also require a bit of actual, old-school listening.

-- Los Angeles Times: One of the pleasures of "Hallows — Part 2" is to see how the film's production team has expanded on relatively brief passages in the book and turned them into satisfying visual splendors. One of the best comes almost at once, with Potter and friends penetrating deep below the earth on a twisting and turning journey to see what's inside the Gringotts' vault belonging to Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter). Just as good is a wild and crazy magical blaze that engulfs that Room of Requirement when a Fiendfyre spell gets out of hand.

-- Roger Ebert: This movie is impressively staged, the dialogue is given proper weight and not hurried through, there are surprises which, in hindsight, seem fair enough, and "Harry Potter" now possesses an end that befits the most profitable series in movie history.

Cannes 2011 review: The Tree of Life

Some films aren’t designed to be watched and absorbed in two hours. They need repeated viewings over the years; they beg for their audience to grow along with them, their meaning evolving over time. Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 is one of those. Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life is another.

Usually a film like this will leave you silent at the end of it, as you begin to make sense of what you’ve just seen and what it all means. If you’re lucky, maybe you have someone with you that you can chew the fat with, someone who will toss ideas and questions back and forth about the movie. We used to call this, “let’s go get coffee and talk about it,” now we call it Twitter.

Therefore, when a movie like Tree of Life is finally seen at the Cannes Film Fest, and in London and later in New York and Los Angeles, the conversation about it will take place loudly and wildly on Twitter. That usually means snap judgments are made and sides are taken. The discussion first at bat was whether or not the French audiences booed the Terrence Malick film. They did boo it. They booed it immediately, taking no time to think it over. Much of the rest of the audience did sit silent and still before breaking into applause. One of the reasons that it took so long for the applause was that people weren’t sure if it was over or not. It wasn’t until Malick’s name appeared on the screen that the audience knew for sure it was over.

Whether or not you get anything out of it will depend on your willingness to look. People are still excavating meaning out of Kubrick’s 2001, which, like Tree of Life, takes place over all time and takes on the daunting challenge of explaining life’s meaning. How do you explain something that shall forever remain a mystery? By doing just that: making the mystery itself the explanation. To that end, is there anything ever put to film as mysteriously beautiful as The Tree of Life? I don’t think so.

There is a sequence in the film, which kind of meanders around through the subconscious of its characters, but probably specifically one character (who grows up to be Sean Penn). As a family absorbs the shock of a death, we are plunged back in time — as in, all the way back in time, before there was even life on earth. The seed of desire is planted in an instant. This desire will swell to a lifetime’s searching, a primal need for another person to fulfill it. How lovely to see it played out with such subtlety, without judgment, the truth laid bare.

When you love someone, have grown up with them, they are part of your biology. This film makes the point that the very biology to which you belong is the biology to which all life on earth also belongs. Does it matter, in the end, if it’s the “grace” of God or the hand of nature? It is all part of the life experience because it all exists inside of us.

If it sounds like I’m explaining a religious experience, that’s because the film does sort of play like an artistic revival meeting. It is much closer to a rapture than it is a movie. For an admitted atheist such as myself I had to remove the literal God element and see it more in terms of this force of life that no one has yet been able to explain (and probably no one ever will). But if you’re a religious person, you will probably experience this film on an entirely different level than I did.

It isn’t all gobbledegook – There is a sort of plot to it, of sorts. The family mourns the death of one of their own. We see their lives in flashback. A married couple, three kids, a working father who is transferred. Brad Pitt plays the father, Jessica Chastain is the mother. They appear to be your typical American family growing up in the 1950s. Pitt is too hard on the kids, too wrapped up in his work. The mother is gentle, pretty, kind – a teacher. The boys are seem right out of a Norman Rockwell painting. What could be wrong with this picture?

That’s just it. There isn’t any right or wrong here. Malick doesn’t want to put any blame on anyone. He’s making a film that is more like a painting — it takes years of practice to be able to paint well in the abstract, but this is how Malick thinks. He’s a lucky auteur that he’s given such free reign to make the kinds of films he prefers to make, and hopefully will continue to make.

Much of what gets said in Tree of Life is said in whispers, by characters, about themselves or to someone. These are whispered truths – sometimes hard to bear for the teller. But the truth is the truth: you can deny it but it will still stay within you, always there, always true.

There is a sense of lulling that is present throughout the film – a lulling back to a different time. This boy’s memories of his childhood, so seeped with primal urges: love, guilt, fear, lust, anger, jealousy. With each memory that is played before us we think we’re learning something new, that we’re getting a clearer picture of the character – maybe because then it will bring us some understand about life. But of course, what many of us know for a certainty is that we have these emotions. We can’t really explain them. But they exist whether we want them to or not.

So much of Tree of Life is saturated with beauty — inside and out. The difficult part of it, I think, comes at the end. There is no point in spoiling it but suffice it to say the ending gives away too much. It is perhaps too literal compared to the rest of the film, which, I believe, sets the movie off balance.

But that’s a small price to pay for the rumination of who and what we are that Malick has worked so hard to bring to us. We don’t get any easy answers, but we get the chance to take a trip down through our collective past, to remember moments where one tiny gesture can affect our behavior for the rest of your lives, and to remember once again that these are days for living. Or what’s a heaven for?

The Real Housewives of New Jersey Review

The new season of The Real Housewives of New Jersey premieres on Monday, and we have two new preview clips. The first, above, introduces us to Melissa Gorga, who happens to be Teresa Giudice’s sister-in-law. If the trailer below is any indication, the ladies seem to have softened up on their stance regarding strippers. Plus, look for singing, family drama, hand waving and more family drama. It'll leave you saying, "Danielle who?"
Joining 'Real Housewives of New Jersey' on Bravo's schedule are 'Million Dollar Decorators' (Tues., May 31 at 10PM), a new series following the work and personal life of a group of high-end interior decorators, and 'Rocco's Dinner Party' (Wed., June 15 at 11PM), that features three chefs competing for the chance to cater an evening for Rocco DiSpirito and his celebrity friends.

Baffling Bloated Praise for 'Bridesmaids'

I feel like I'm in some kind of modern retelling of The Emperor's New Clothes.  Why am I the only one who sees the truth here, that Bridesmaids is simply not a movie worthy of a 90% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes?

Why are the critics so afraid of saying anything negative at all about this movie?  It feels very patronizing, like, "Oh, this is a lady movie and we need to like this lady movie so all the ladies will get off our backs about never promoting or producing any lady movies.  We're throwing you a bone here, ladies (Ha ha, bone).  Now you can sit back and watch us blow shit up for the rest of the summer."

The film itself is not the worst thing I've ever seen.  I mean, I did see Something Borrowed last week.  Bridesmaids is definitely better than that movie, but that's kind of like saying, "Sure CSI: Miami is better than watching a chimpanzee spread his boogers over a brick wall for an hour."  Maybe that's a bad analogy.  I'm sure there's a YouTubing contingent out there who would love to watch the monkey video.

But that's kind of the problem with Bridesmaids.  It tries really, really hard to appeal to the booger-spreading-chimp-watching contingent of the population, which is fine, if that's the intention of the entire film.  But I don't think that was the initial intention of the ladies behind Bridesmaids.  All of the broad humor seems thrown in to punch up the energy of the film or whatever, but it feels forced and like it only exists to appease the lowest common denominator.

Also, Kristen Wiig's character is a mess.  What is she?  In most scenes she's a doormat who can't even keep her roommates from wearing her clothes, but then all of a sudden, while working at her sad little job, she's calling a teenager "See You Next Tuesday."  She has way too many meltdowns throughout the course of the film.  All of her pent up frustration should've been saved for the shower scene where she could finally let loose.

I enjoyed Megan, Melissa McCarthy's character, when she first introduced herself to Wiig's character, but then the film just devolved her into the stereotypical big gross over-sexualized lady.  Oooh, look at her with those giant calves hitting on a man!  Who does she think she is? 

And of course there's a random unnecessary girl-on-girl smooch.  Of course there is.  You knew there would be.

So, yeah.  Girls, here's your lady movie for the year.  It's not that good or consistent.  The plot is thinner than rice paper.  It's too long, yet it ends oddly abruptly.  But it has SIX WHOLE VAGINAS in it!  Grab your lady friends, pour yourself a Cosmo, and drop your $10 on the theater like it's hot! 

'Rolling in the Deep' lyrics not censored on 'Glee'

Did we just hear what we think we just heard? When Jesse St. James (Jonathan Groff) and Rachel Berry (Lea Michele) performed Adele's song "Rolling in the Deep" tonight on the highly anticipated prom episode of"Glee," we're pretty sure that a certain curse word wasn't cut out.

Meanwhile, on "Dancing With the Stars," Adele performed the hit -- and she did censor it to keep it prime-time friendly.
The line in question in Adele's original version is "Finally, I can see you crystal clear. Go ahead and sell me out and a I'll lay your s*** bare." If we're not mistaken, that's what we heard on the air.
Perhaps they replaced it with "shift" or "ship" or something equally nonsensical, and we just can't tell the difference? Listen to the clip below and tell us what you think. Is it what we think it is?

Thousands of fans, TD activists lined up to wish the star couple. There was a massive traffic jam in madhapur and surrounding areas.

South Park," "Funnybot," lampoon Comedy Central's recent Comedy Awards

The May 4 episode of "South Park," "Funnybot," the series decided to lampoon Comedy Central's recent Comedy Awards -- and take down a (sometimes) funny icon in the process.

Tyler Perry popped up throughout the episode, in full Madea garb, after South Park Elementary presents him with the "Kathy Griffin Award." And in typical South Park fashion, they continued to mock Perry's omnipresence by showing the series' only African American character, Token Black, slipping him money for every "hallelujer."
Thrown into the mix were some delightful "Doctor Who" references, and, most impressively, the 11th hour acknowledgment of Sunday's news of Osama bin Laden's death.
With less than 72-hours notice, co-creator Trey Parker (who wrote and directed the episode) included a scene of President Obama addressing the nation from the oval office -- though instead of discussing Bin Laden, it's everyone's first guess after news of the late-night address: the end of the world.
