The Masters 2011, PREVIEW , Battle For No. 1

THE FAVORITE: Defending Champ Has Regained Winning Ways.

The world ranking is so crowded at the top that six of the top seven players have a chance to reach the top of the ranking by winning the Masters this week. That includes Tiger Woods, who has slipped to No. 7. The four majors offer 100 world ranking points to the winner.

Last weekend at the Houston Open, Lefty dropped a big W on his doubters who were chirping The Thrill is too old, too erratic, too long without a win. Nope, nope, and no longer. For years, Mickelson has used the PGA Spring swing as a tune-up for the Masters. Looks like the plan's working. He started as the second favorite betting choice at 10-1 but he's top dog now at 6-1. I like his chances a lot. It will all come down to whether or not he carries over the sensational short game he showed-off in Houston. If it's on, Phil's going to repeat.

Martin Kaymer remains No. 1, followed by Lee Westwood, Mickelson, Luke Donald, Graeme McDowell, Paul Casey and Woods. Casey is the only player among the top seven who could not reach No. 1 even by winning at Augusta because he has played more tournaments than Woods.
